LESC has a long history of offering hope and healing to those struggling with addiction. But, like many non-profit organizations, our success relies on the dedication of our board members and volunteers. Dr. Howard Leifman is one such individual who brings his expertise and passion to guide LESC’s mission. As a non-profit board member, Dr. Leifman plays a vital role in shaping the future of our addiction treatment programs and ensuring we continue to provide the best possible care for our clients. In this interview, Dr. Leifman shares his insights on what makes LESC a worthy cause for volunteers and board members and the impact it has on the lives of individuals in need.
Dr. Leifman’s Journey to Board Membership: From Practitioner to Advocate
Adding LESC board membership to his clinical practice responsibilities, marked a significant evolution in Dr. Leifman’s career dedicated to mental health and addiction treatment. Beginning his journey as a therapist, Dr. Leifman gained extensive experience in providing compassionate care and evidence-based therapies to individuals struggling with mental health challenges and substance use disorders. His deep understanding of the complexities surrounding these issues and his commitment to improving treatment outcomes positioned him as a leader in the field.
Dr. Leifman joined LESC’s board nearly five years ago, and currently serves as board secretary. He wanted to influence systemic change and broaden his impact beyond direct patient care. Encouraged by a client who believed he would be a good fit for the organization, Dr. Leifman embraced the opportunity. He shares, “Every chance I get to go to an event, every chance I get to interact with clients, I can see that we are making a difference in people’s lives, and that’s what makes this all worth it.” In his role, Dr. Leifman leverages his clinical expertise to shape policies, advocate for innovative approaches in mental health care, and oversee the implementation of comprehensive treatment programs, making a real difference in the New York City communities LESC serves.
Board members are vital to an organization like LESC. As a board member, Dr. Leifman connects with LESC’s mission and is driven to help the organization evolve and adapt to meet the diverse needs of its community. “I see our role as board members as adding both industry and outside professional business knowledge so that we can be a sounding board for the executive team and Valerie,” says Leifman. “I don’t see our role as being involved in the day-to-day running of the organization. I see our role as being more strategic and acting as assistants to Valerie in helping her with the strategic overview of the organization.”
Dr. Leifman on LESC: Differentiating Factors and Community Impact
Dr. Leifman believes that LESC stands out due to its comprehensive approach to mental health and addiction services, tailored to the specific needs of the diverse communities it serves. Unlike other organizations he’s been involved with in the past, LESC integrates a wide range of services under one roof, from outpatient counseling to residential treatment and crisis intervention. This holistic model ensures continuity of care and fosters a supportive environment where individuals can find stability and hope.
When it comes to LESC’s impact on the community, Dr. Leifman values how the organization actively engages with local stakeholders and collaborates with community partners to address broader social determinants of health. By offering accessible services and advocating for mental health awareness, LESC contributes significantly to improving the community’s overall well-being.
For Dr. Leifman, the most rewarding aspect of serving on the board is witnessing the tangible difference LESC makes in people’s lives. The organization firmly lives out its commitment to promoting love, energy, safety and compassion. He shares, “I’m a firm believer that for this population in particular, there hasn’t been an awful lot of love. No, it’s a tough population in that often times there’s manipulation; there’s a lot of loss; there’s a lot of unrequited love. You know, there’s a lot of feelings of being unloved. I really like the word ‘love’ because it’s something that I feel is missing from people’s lives most of the time.” He finds fulfillment in seeing individuals regain their independence, families reunite, and communities thrive due to the organization’s efforts.

He also underscores the need for individuals who are willing to contribute their expertise, time, and resources to support LESC’s programs and initiatives. “As a board member, you are helping to both assist and provide strategy for an organization that’s been around a long time, and that does amazing work for a lot of people,” he affirms.

Joining LESC’s board is not just about fulfilling a role but about becoming part of a passionate team dedicated to improving lives and making a lasting impact on the well-being of the communities served.
