Breaking the Cycle: Comprehensive Support for Problem Gambling at LESC

LESC is proud to announce the expansion of our Dual Recovery Services (DRS) Program to include specialized support for Problem Gambling. This addition reflects our commitment to holistic care, addressing not just substance use disorders (SUDs) but also behavioral challenges like problem gambling. We aim to provide comprehensive solutions that cater to each individual’s unique needs, fostering resilience and sustainable recovery.

Understanding the Grip of Gambling

Gambling can be a fun and social activity, but for some, it can become a destructive force. Problem gambling, or compulsive gambling, is a serious impulse control disorder with far-reaching consequences. According to the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), approximately 2-3% of Americans meet the criteria for problem gambling, with another 1% classified as pathological gamblers. These numbers may seem small, but they represent millions of lives impacted by this disorder. Here are some key facts:

  • Over 2 million adults in the U.S. meet the criteria for a severe gambling problem.
  • An estimated 6-8 million adults in the U.S. have a gambling problem.
  • Problem gambling can impact anyone, regardless of age, socioeconomic status, or background.

Symptoms of problem gambling can range from a preoccupation with gambling and an inability to control gambling impulses, to lying about or hiding gambling activities. Financial strain, fractured relationships, and neglect of responsibilities are potential consequences. Research by the Mayo Clinic suggests that problem gambling is associated with higher rates of anxiety, depression, and substance abuse, highlighting the complex interplay between mental health and addictive behaviors.

At LESC, our approach to problem gambling mirrors our approach to substance use disorders – with empathy, evidence-based practices, and a focus on individualized care. Our team of professionals, including Board Certified Psychiatrists, clinical social workers, and addiction counselors, collaborate to create personalized treatment plans that address the underlying factors driving problem gambling behaviors.

Why Family Support Matters

Problem gambling doesn’t just affect the individual struggling with it. It takes a toll on loved ones as well. Family members and significant others can experience a range of emotions, including worry, anger, shame, and financial strain.

Recognizing the interconnected nature of addiction and mental health, LESC emphasizes the importance of addressing dual issues within families. Our DRS Program not only provides support for individuals with problem gambling but also extends services to family members and significant others affected by the consequences of their loved one’s problem gambling. Through counseling, education, and support groups, we empower families to navigate challenges, heal relationships, and cultivate resilience together.
