Love, Energy, Safety, Compassion: which one resonates with you most and why?
While all of them resonate with me, compassion resonates the most.
At LESC, our work is not just about clinical or technical skills but also about compassion. In HR, we guide the entire workforce journey, from Workforce Planning and Talent Acquisition to Compensation and Benefits, Performance Management, Employee Relations, Resources, and Legal & Compliance. Whether reviewing benefit plans, formulating policies, recruiting, or fostering staff development, compassion ensures that people are always at the heart of our work.
What is your favorite part of being the Vice President of Human Resources at LESC?
What I love most about my Vice President of HR role is witnessing growth at every level. I see staff honing their skills, advancing their careers, and enhancing their leadership abilities. I understand that this growth directly impacts the quality of care our clients receive. When our staff flourishes, our clients and communities thrive.
What motivates you to do your work every day at LESC?
I am the daughter of a divorced mother of four, originally from Puerto Rico. My mom came to New York hoping to work and save money to bring her mother here. Unfortunately, my grandmother passed away before my mom was able to bring her over. My mother instilled in me a deep respect and understanding that most of us work to support ourselves and our families financially.
I am in a fortunate position where I can financially support my family and choose to do meaningful work. I joined LESC because I believe in its leadership, people, and mission. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to building systems and a culture that supports our mission. This is one of the most meaningful aspects of my role, and I am thankful for it every day.
Can you share a memorable moment or achievement from your time at LESC that you’re particularly proud of?
Over the past 17 years, I have had so many wonderful moments at LESC. One of the moments I’m most proud of was seeing how our staff pulled together during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the face of fear, uncertainty, and tremendous personal and professional challenges, our team remained focused on the people we serve. Valerie and the executive team provided leadership and support, but the line staff adapted, supported one another, and found new ways to deliver care in extraordinary circumstances. As HR, I ensured they had the resources, flexibility, and emotional support to keep going. The staff showed true strength that came from resilience, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to LESC’s mission.
