As we close the chapter on 2024, LESC’s accomplishments are proof of our commitment to serving New York City. Through challenges and triumphs, the past year has been one of growth, innovation, and continued purpose. Reflecting on this progress reveals how far we’ve come and how much potential lies ahead. As Valerie Walters, President and CEO of LESC, explains, “This year has been one of resilience and purpose, a testament to the dedication and passion of our incredible team. As CEO, I’ve witnessed firsthand the extraordinary progress we’ve made and the lives we’ve touched, and I’m more optimistic than ever about what’s ahead.”
Through challenges and triumphs, LESC’s commitment to serving the NYC community has grown stronger with new programs and an ever-expanding team.
2024 Accomplishments:
- Expanded Care and Expertise: After a full year of preparation, our Residential Redesign officially launched on January 1, 2025. LESC is now equipped to handle any substance use disorder, and our highly-personalized care will be better able to meet individuals where they are in their recovery journey.
- Enhanced Accessibility: We updated and launched a new website, making it easier for people to find us and our services. This crucial step ensures that those in need can readily access the support they deserve.
- New Program Offerings: We added a new program focused on Problem Gambling, addressing a critical need within our community. The Residential Redesign will also be part of these efforts.
- Housing Successes: We maintained a 90% occupancy rate across all housing programs, ensuring that individuals and families have a safe and secure place to call home.
- We assisted 25 tenants in transitioning to independent housing. All of them maintained employment, a testament to the effectiveness of our support programs.
- We ensured 100% of tenant children remained enrolled in school, prioritizing their educational well-being.
- Significant Renovation: Our 6th Street property underwent a $9 million renovation, an investment that will enhance the quality of life for our residents for years to come.
Preparing for 2025: Challenges and Opportunities
As we look to the future, 2025 presents a complex landscape with both opportunities and challenges. Changes in behavioral healthcare under the new administration – including potential cuts to Medicaid Managed Care and discussions around work requirements for Medicaid benefits – could have significant implications for the communities we serve. With approximately 80% of our clients relying on Medicaid, these shifts demand vigilance and adaptability.
To navigate these uncertainties, we are embracing a more responsive planning model. This strategy prioritizes short-term, clear objectives, allowing us to adapt quickly while maintaining our strategic direction. Our leadership team and senior managers are united in their commitment to:
- Address systemic issues and recalibrate our objectives as needed.
- Build sustainable momentum through continuous improvement.
- Strengthen our capacity to respond effectively to regulatory and funding changes.
A Vision for 2025 and Beyond
Despite the challenges ahead, LESC will continue to thrive. Our mission of empowering individuals and fostering community well-being remains our guiding purpose. In 2025, we will:
- Continue to expand and refine our programs to address emerging community needs through our new Residential Redesign and others to come.
- Leverage our enhanced infrastructure and expertise to serve even more individuals.
- Strengthen our partnerships and advocacy efforts to ensure that the voices of those we serve are heard.
The dedication of our team and the support of our partners fuel our optimism for the future. Together, we’ll continue to provide impactful addiction recovery services and address the ever-evolving needs of New York City.
As we move forward, we’re ready to embrace new challenges and opportunities with determination and a renewed commitment to our mission. Here’s to a year of growth, adaptability, and continued service to our surrounding community.
