Empowering Through Employment: Alphonzo’s Vocational Advocacy at LESC

Vocational counseling can be a beacon of hope and opportunity for individuals navigating life’s challenges. At the heart of this process at LESC stands Alphonzo Elder, a dedicated vocational counselor whose unwavering commitment to his clients transcends mere job training. Through his tireless efforts and compassionate guidance, Alphonzo sheds light on the journey toward personal and professional growth, especially for minority groups, illuminating the many possibilities ahead.

Alphonzo’s role at LESC and his commitment to vocational counseling reveals a narrative of resilience, empowerment, and the profound impact that vocational counseling makes; a narrative that is particularly resounding during the commemoration of Black History Month. When asked what Resilient Recovery means to him after more than 18 years at LESC, he said, “Not giving up on people who look like me.”

Vocational Counseling at LESC: A Journey Towards Meaningful Employment

At LESC, we believe in the transformative power of vocational counseling, education, and job placement support. Our mission is to help individuals, regardless of past experiences, find a sense of purpose and direction through gainful employment.

Alphonzo underscores the importance of vocational training in empowering individuals to build a better future. His emphasis on computer literacy and job interview preparation highlights LESC’s commitment to equipping individuals with the skills needed to succeed in today’s job market.

As Alphonzo said, “Vocational training involves helping people do things that we take for granted; I can’t think of everything, but definitely using computers, filling out applications. We let them use a computer, and we can do the training right here.” It’s about empowering individuals to feel capable and to stand on their own two feet.

At LESC, individuals can explore:

  • Personalized Vocational Treatment Plans: LESC offers personalized vocational treatment plans tailored to individual aptitudes, interests, and career goals.
  • Job Readiness Training: Clients receive comprehensive job readiness training, which includes resumé writing, interview preparation, and workplace etiquette.
  • Skill Building and Knowledge Enhancement: Through vocational counseling, clients can build essential job skills and enhance their knowledge in various industries.
  • GED Preparation: LESC supports clients seeking their GED, offering educational resources and assistance to help them achieve this milestone.
  • On-Site Employment Opportunities: Clients can kickstart their work journey with on-site employment opportunities, including apprenticeships in maintenance, food service roles, internships, and administrative tasks.
  • Collaboration with Community Partners: LESC collaborates closely with community partners to connect clients with various vocational opportunities, ensuring they have access to meaningful employment options beyond the program.
  • Peer Support and Guidance: Clients receive support and guidance from LESC peer support specialists who have overcome similar challenges, fostering a supportive environment conducive to personal and professional growth.

Finding Purpose After Pain

Alphonzo is no stranger to adversity. His journey is deeply rooted in his personal experiences and a profound commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. Growing up amidst the challenges of substance use disorder and familial struggles, Alphonzo developed a keen understanding of the systemic barriers that hinder individuals from realizing their full potential.

His early exposure to community programs and support services left an indelible mark, igniting a passion for advocacy and social justice. “When I was younger, there was a family member that used to take me to the programs – and that’s been my motivation to do the work that I’m doing.”

Alphonzo’s path led him to LESC, where he found a platform to channel his empathy and expertise into tangible solutions. With a background rooted in resilience, Alphonzo brings a unique perspective to his role, drawing from his own experiences to inspire and empower those he serves. In an industry where burnout is common, Alphonzo remains committed. “What drives me at LESC? The satisfaction of helping to change people’s lives one step at a time.”

Alphonzo’s dedication to his clients shines through in the success stories he shares, emphasizing the transformative power of teaching real-world skills. He proudly mentions, “I have had so many interns here at LESC. They are all doing well. I’m happy about that, too, because they are helping change a lot of people’s lives.”

Even in moments of challenge, Alphonzo stays committed to helping individuals find the tools and confidence to succeed. Through his guidance and mentorship, clients in LESC’s vocational counseling program are equipped with the skills and resilience needed to navigate the complexities of the job market and pursue meaningful career paths.
