Finding Hope at LESC Su Casa: Virginia’s Story

LESC Su Casa is a place of remarkable hope, transforming lives in unimaginable ways. Virginia is a testament to that transformative power. “I am living proof that any addict can find a new way of life and survive the horrors of addiction. Literally, if you would have seen me, you would not believe where I’m at today,” she said. Her inspiring journey from addiction and homelessness to a life of resilient recovery was made possible with the support of LESC.

Virginia’s entry to LESC wasn’t planned. Nine months pregnant and desperate for change, she stumbled upon Su Casa through an unexpected connection with a friend in recovery. At the time, Virginia was living in an abandoned building and kept everything she owned in a trash bag. She was faced with a difficult choice between seeking treatment or resorting to desperate measures. LESC became the turning point in her life.

The Unwavering Support of Su Casa’s Community

Two weeks after arriving at Su Casa, Virginia gave birth to her daughter. In the midst of her struggle, fellow clients and LESC staff rallied around her, providing unwavering support. Su Casa became a haven for Virginia, offering a safe space to rebuild her life from the ground up. Virginia found unconditional love and acceptance at Su Casa from the beginning. The community embraced her. Su Casa created an environment where recovery and transformation could flourish.

A Remarkable Turnaround

Though Virginia was separated from her newborn daughter initially, she defied the odds and regained custody within four months—a feat unheard of in the system. Virginia was so happy for that second chance to be a parent. “My daughter is amazing,” Virginia emphasized. “We’ve had so many trials and tribulations, but we’ve had so much good stuff, too.”

Today, she’s still in awe of her own transformation. “Fast forward twelve years later, I make a six-figure income. I am in a career that I love,” she reported. “I’ll be at work and think, if these people really knew who I was, would I be here? You know what I mean? Like, who would have thought the junkie from the streets that lived in the abandoned house in Bushwick would be where I’m at today? Part of me is like, you better share that. And part of me is like, don’t tell those people because they’re not going to get it. But that’s why I was so excited to share!”

Investing in Hope

Virginia’s journey from a life marked by addiction and hardship to financial stability and personal success serves as living proof that with the right support, anyone can find a new way of life. She gives credit to the recovery professionals at Su Casa and the network of care available at LESC. Her story is a powerful testament to resilience, drive, and LESC Su Casa’s remarkable impact.
