Embracing Support and Resources

According to Mike, “LESC gave me all the resources they had.” He acknowledges the invaluable support he received, mentioning the case managers, drug counselor, and therapist available on site. “In a way, I took advantage of all three of them,” he said. These dedicated professionals played a pivotal role in his journey towards addiction recovery and personal development – guiding him to access medical assistance and mental health services that addressed his unique needs.

Overcoming Addiction and Seeking Rehabilitation

Describing his initial state, Mike recalls, “I was still a stone-cold addict.” However, with the support of his drug counselor, he actively engaged in treatment programs. “I did about two rehabs while I was there,” he shared. LESC provided him with a safe place to return to – overcoming addiction and offering him hope for a better future.

A Community of Support

Reflecting on his experience, Mike acknowledges the impact of LESC’s community connections. He explained, “They also plugged me into Housing Works,” a daytime program that further supported his recovery journey. Mike found solace and encouragement from both LESC’s staff and the residents in LESC’s supportive housing program, creating a sense of belonging and a support system throughout his 20-year stay.

Challenges Faced and Overcoming Obstacles

Throughout his time at LESC, Mike faced various challenges, including medical issues and personal tragedies. He recalls, “I had a complete hip replacement, and that’s a very painful thing.” He also encountered a life-altering condition called Vitiligo, which caused a dramatic change in his skin pigmentation. Reflecting on this difficult period, Mike shares, “My actual color was very dark brown. It was most traumatizing; I lost a lot of friends, associations, and had very few people around in my circle.” The journey of coping with Vitiligo spanned over five years, during which Mike experienced isolation, humiliation, and the lack of understanding from others.

Throughout these life challenges, Mike credits the supportive staff at LESC as a pillar of strength. He emphasized, “The staff, again, was very supportive. My therapist and psychiatrists were there for me every week.” With their guidance, he found peace within the LESC community and his housing unit, where fellow tenants provided a supportive network of understanding. LESC’s staff rallied around him, providing the necessary assistance and encouragement. He credits them for helping him navigate these obstacles without relapsing into addiction.

Long-Term Support and Achievements

When asked about his current situation, Mike shared, “I’ve been there for a very long time, 20 years.” LESC’s ongoing support includes regular therapy sessions and psychiatric care to help him maintain his mental health and sobriety. “I got my life back. My family came back into my life, which is a big thing,” Mike exclaimed. His achievements are a testament to his continuous progress, as he actively works on his recovery journey.

Empowerment and Active Involvement

Inspired by the support he received, Mike took an active role in his own recovery and within the LESC community. He shares, “I’m actually on the Housing Committee Board for the agency.” Mike’s involvement showcases the kind of empowerment that LESC fosters – allowing individuals to not only rebuild their lives but also actively contribute to the organization that supports them.

Mike’s journey with LESC is a great example of the transformative power of resilience, support, and personal growth possible in recovery. Through the guidance of LESC’s case managers, drug counselor, and therapist, Mike overcame addiction and found stability in LESC’s housing program. The ongoing support provided by LESC empowered him to navigate challenges, maintain sobriety, and actively contribute to the community. Mike’s story serves as a powerful testament to LESC’s commitment to transforming lives and fostering empowerment.
